A mixture of art, events & different places we’ve visited that were interesting enough to share. A day in the life of the Sldrs.

House of Vans feat. Pusha T

House of Vans threw a small shindig over the weekend featuring DJ Envy, Vince Staples & Pusha T. We had a great view from the skate ramp of the entire thing. I was expecting a big turnout for their ‘Almost Summer’ series, but instead what we got was ENORMOUS. Yeah, that seems more accurate. Try picturing 7-8 blocks worth of people standing in line for a shot to get in.  Nuts. The place holds roughly 900 at capacity, but there was no way everyone got in. Atleast it didn’t seem that way.

DJ Envy’s set was bananas. Probably the best DJ set I’ve sit in for quite awhile. He really killed. Vince’s mic was a bit muffled but he brought out the energy and dedicated fans rapped bars word for word. He even did some new work off of his upcoming Summertime ’06 project.

The night however belong to The Neighborhood Pusher. We got joints of Fear of God, Wrath of Caine and ofcourse, My Name is My Name. He really put on a show. The best part for ME however, was hearing Grindin’. That literally took me back to the days of recreating the beat on lunchroom tables. Overall, it was a great time. Shoutout to HoV for the dope event.

Bubble Battle 2015

If you happened to be in NYC, specifically the Union Sq area you might’ve seen 100s of people of all ages happily playing with bubbles. Seriously. Well that was due to the creative and fun loving group “Happn”. This was their yearly NYC “Bubble Battle.” The premise was simple. Come out, bring a bubble gun and make bubbles. As weird as it may sound, it was a great time.

National Donut Day

The world would be a drastically different place without Donuts. Colder. Much less friendly. This was my first year participating in National Donut Day, and it was GLORIOUS.  If you think people only wait on line for sneakers, phones, supreme & black friday products, boy are you wrong.

Donut Aficionados from all over the city were in attendance at all the top tier Donut locations. Everyone was leaving with boxes (in the case of Dough, if you bought a box you were entered into a raffle to win free Donuts for a YEAR. Yes, 365 days of sugary goodness.)

The first stop was Dough. The line was..long to say the least. However, I can tell you it was well worth the wait. Even something as simple as a glazed donut turned out amazing. They offered a few other products to go along with your donut (i.e. Chocolate Milk!) but you know what the main focus was. I did like seeing the kitchen area in the back. One of the bakers literally came out to check the line and let out a dramatic sigh, and I couldn’t blame him. It was only 6pm and they close at 9pm.

The staff was pretty friendly and service was quick. I’d recommend the place to anyone. Outside, you couldn’t walk past the crowd of onlookers waiting for their turn without someone wanting to know what you got and if there was any left. (A woman had to know if there were any Dulce De Leche left. You could hear the urgency in her voice. Yes, it was that serious.) Might’ve seemed nuts to outsiders, but hey, everyones passionate about something right?

Speaking of nuts (you like that segway?), the 2nd stop was Doughnuttery. A bit of a travel to get there but definitely worth it. They’re located within the Chelsea Market, so if google map confuses you abit on the trek there, just keep that in mind.

Unlike Dough, they specialize in smaller donuts with distinct toppings. If you make it there, get the fruity pebbles & Vanilla Glaze Sprinkles then thank me later. The line wasn’t too crazy, which was a blessing and the guys working there were pretty cool. Great snacking food. There just isn’t enough hours in the day to hit ALL the possible spots in the city, but for a first timer like myself, it was a good day. You can tell this kid had a long day.

Maybe more next year? If you’re curious about either spot, I’ve added all the links you need below!

MINIFEST: Recap

MINIFEST

Good vibes! This past weekend, the good folks of Dope League and Genmotion put together a fundraiser for the film “ELLA: The Love Story” They raffled off free Tattoos, Artwork and even Clothing. (Ironically, a guy won the dress. Go figure.)

The main highlight for me however will of course be the performances. And there were a ton. Haven’t seen a few of the performers in awhile so it was great to be there for it. I even became a fan of a few new faces I wasn’t familiar with before. (Always a good thing!) It may have started at 5pm, but definitely didn’t end until nearly 2am.

The overall energy for the night was totally positive and seeing everyone come together for the sake of making the film happen was a beautiful thing. And I had a front row seat for it all. Check out the quick summary video below for a preview of what you missed. Also hit the YT page later today for extended clips. [ http://www.YouTube.com/ToySldrs ]
